Life long resident and community activist of Queens, NY, Michele Gilliam is hoping her voice and her writing can reach beyond her beloved city. After years of living with long-term depression, Michele has expanded her advocacy and recently has become involved in issues relating to mental health, while she continues to try to improve her own. While Black With The Blues primarily explores black people’s various experiences with mental illness, all are welcome to participate in ongoing dialogue about the struggles we may share, and the happiness we all strive for.

You can find many of Michele’s writings at, and at The Narrator, the feature blog of New York Writers Coalition. She is a member of two separate playwriting workshops- the UX play writing workshop at the Castillo Theater and the Black Playwrights Group at the Liberation Theatre Company- where she has written her first play Displaced.
